The RED Bookshelf is a program dedicated to getting books into children's homes. Through community efforts our trained staff and volunteers collect, prepare, and distribute books onto RED Bookshelves in Albany, New York. These shelves are in places where children are, and we feel strongly that affording children the opportunity to select their own books will foster their lifelong love of reading. Children love books and love to own them. Children are drawn to the books and bright red bookshelves and naturally choose books that appeal to them.
The Bright Red Bookshelf Program came to Albany in February, 2009 as a neighborhood literacy program of the Center Square Association. Through the years, as word got out, bookshelves were added, as more neighbors and friends supported the program. However, the program needed to expand exponentially to be able to provide for the continuing bookshelf requests. So in 2016, the Bright Red Bookshelf Program of Albany was incorporated as The RED Bookshelf, an independent nonprofit, to facilitate the necessary expansion.Since its beginnings in 2009, The RED Bookshelf has distributed more than 27,000 books for children in Albany!

At The RED Bookshelf, we accept donations of gently used children’s books. We clean and repair each book, in order to provide free books for families and children to choose and keep. We currently supply books on seven bright red bookshelves in the City of Albany. With your help in the coming years, we will give books to all 125,000 children in the Capital District of New York. We will accomplish this through the power of community and volunteer efforts to prepare and distribute books.
